What Makes A Successful Service Business

By Marissa Velazquez

A service business is dedicated to providing services rather than products to their customers. Some companies do provide products in addition to the services they offer. They may work for individual consumers or other companies depending on the purpose of the company. Some businesses market to both sectors as in carpet cleaners and landscaping.

Technological advances have made the world far more affluent and services friendly. Things that once were taken care of personally are now given to others to take care of. Housekeeping and landscaping are two prime examples of this. People are also living much longer and personal care needs such as shopping or transportation are far more important than twenty or thirty years ago.

When starting out in the services sector the financial investment may be small or large. Many start by working from their homes and avoid expensive property leasing costs. House keepers, errand runners, and care givers find this approach most attractive as a beginning venture. There by putting any thoughts of expansion on hold until they are established. Other product based services such as auto repair, pet grooming, or yard services will need to invest substantially more into equipment and location.

By bringing their services to the client many companies are taking advantage of an edge that their competitors do not have. The convenience of being able to make an appointment for service at home appeals to many clients. It has become common practice for customers to request home service rather than visiting an office or business.

As with any trade you must know how to accomplish what you are selling. You must also be highly skilled at it and know the newest techniques and tricks. The one thing you must bear in mind is that your customer is the thing that keeps you in business. Losing one customer can cost you thousands of dollars in lost revenue. An unhappy customer will also tell their friends about the problems they had with your company.

Marketing is also important to understand. If you are offering personal services for your clients it would be foolish to market to the businesses in your area. Conversely you do not want to deliver fliers door to door if you are considering operating services designed to appeal to companies in the area. The other issues in marketing are that they are intangible, perishable and cannot be separated from the providers.

As society becomes more affluent and lives longer the services offered must change with the needs. Even though many of these markets seem never to change they eventually will conform to progress. Consumers can afford to employ services based people to do the things they no longer have time or desire to do.

Whether you are building a service business for the individual, another company or the technological market there are customers out there waiting for your services. Services are a broad spectrum of society today. Doctors and lawyers as well as nannies and housekeepers are dependent upon the public to support their businesses. The key factors to be aware of are good services and return customers.
