Safety When Using Prisoner Transport Systems

By Leslie Ball

How inmates are handled is a very sensitive subject that should be taken as the top priority in correctional facilities. Some factors pertaining how they are handled include the prisoner transport systems that are used while moving the inmate either into the rehabilitation center or while transporting the individual out of the center after the sentence period has ended.

The means through which they are transported from one area to another should proceed with no difficulties encountered on either side of the involved parties. The inmates and guards should both reach the destination in one piece without any technicalities occurring between them. Measure in keeping the convicts detained should be keenly investigated before boarding the means of transport.

The means used should have the necessary resources to keep the convicts detained and away from any objects that can hurt themselves or the supervising guards available at the time. Therefore the contractor involved in setting up the restraints that will be used on the prisoner is supposed to be thoroughly vetted and investigated to avoid any collusion with inmates.

This caution is especially required during the movement of an inmate either being transferred to a new facility or being transported from the court to prison. Most convicts try to use this chance to escape from prison because the guards involved are restricted as compared to the prison center where reinforcements can arrive within minutes of a riot or escape to maintain the situation.

They are also psychologically trained to deal with what they may hear from the inmates. Some may go as far as threatening the family of the correctional officer in charge at a given period of time. Due to this, the officers are advised not to carry any personal belongings inside the jail or anywhere in the vicinity to avoid them from getting controlled.

Therefore, prisoners are not only transported from courts to the correctional facilities only as there are different conditions that an inmate transfer can occur. A convict can be transferred from one facility to another maximum security one or to a lower depending on the condition of transfer at a respective period of time.

Thus the reason for training before one is admitted to work at such an establishment. High level criminals with long histories of illegal activities and other inhumane activities are the most ruthless people. This is why they should be matched with skilled personnel who will be able to deal with them with the same brutal force required in order for peace to prevail.

They should therefore not be put under such situations that may endanger their lives. The situation should always be under the control of officers involved with the prisoners. There should also be constant communication with the prison with regular checkups to monitor the status of the ongoing operation. The prison facilities involved in the transportation process should also be in communication to ensure the exchange is successful.
