Highlight Your Garden Features With Subtle Outdoor Lighting

By Marci Glover

During the daylight hours, we all feel far more secure because we can easily see what is going on outside. However, as the light starts to fade, we can become uncertain of our surroundings, and also who is approaching. Places that we are familiar with, such as our garden or local streets, become strangely unfamiliar.

We have all opened our front door and not been able to see the person standing on the porch very clearly. This is because there is no outdoor lighting to help us. If only for security reasons, it is essential that we have some form of lighting illuminating our outdoor spaces, however, the same lighting can be used to beautify the same areas.

These days there are many different kinds of lamps you can use outside. Some designs are extremely discreet, and no longer take the form of floodlights that used to dazzle people. If you have a walkway through your garden it would be a good idea to use lamps on the top of waist-high poles. To save on energy consumption, you can also get them so that they only work when somebody is nearby.

The way you intend to use the lights will have a great bearing on how best to power them. If you intend to use security lamps that are on throughout the long dark nights it would be sensible to connect them to the mains supply. However, if you are using them to make your garden safer to walk through in early evening, or to work with motion detectors, solar powered lamps should be adequate.

If you enjoy holding parties or barbecues in your garden area, if there is not any lighting outside you have to send everybody home when dusk falls. Just by installing a few lamps would mean your parties could go on longer into the evening. This is because the guests would feel more relaxed and still be able to move around without risk of hurting themselves.

If these lamps are positioned well, they could also make your home more secure. Depending on your needs, you could set them to come on at certain times of the day, or use a motion sensor so that they only come on as somebody approaches them. If you are planning to have your garden landscaped, that is the best time to plan the lighting so that they could be powered by cables that have been laid underground. If you are adding lighting to an existing garden, good use of solar powered lamps would be the best choice.

If you are to use powerful lamps close to public areas there are a lot of things that you have to bear in mind. It is important that the lamps do not shine directly into the eyes of passes by, especially if they are driving vehicles. This can be extremely dangerous, particularly when the lights are very bright and operate by motion detectors, as the sudden light could temporarily blind a driver.

There are a lot of specialists who design outdoor areas who can help you in your choice and positioning of lamps, but this could be outside of your budget. An alternative method is to make use of the free standing solar powered lamps available, though these will initially be expensive, but will have minimal running costs. Lighting your outdoor areas can add both beauty and security, and also allow you to spend more time relaxing in your garden.
