Local Janitorial Distributors Will Keep You On Track

By Leslie Ball

It does not matter whether you have started a cleaning business or are a facility manager, responsible for maintaining a cleaning crew, you need tools, equipment, supplies and chemicals to perform these tasks. You also need information. The place to obtain all of this is at a local janitorial distributors location.

Tools, such as brushes, putty knives, brooms, mops and buckets, not to mention dust pans, are needed. All of these instruments will be displayed in these local store fronts for comparison. Finding the right size, shape, weight and in the appropriate materials is critical for ease of use in varying situations.

Floor machines, such a vacuums, carpet cleaners and even pressure washers can be examined in detail. Identifying the best possible mix of machines, regardless of brand, will enable you and your cleaners to provide professional service to your clients. Testing them out, in a back room of most of these stores, will assist in learning things you may not have known about their abilities and functions.

Supplies are all of those things that are used to get into the hidden places for dust and dirt. Cloths, dusters and mops, regardless of material used are vital. All of these are on display for touching and using so that each item can be selected for their functionality in hands on operation. Terry cloth is an old line, material and micro fiber cloth is the newer replacement, but sometimes the old line stuff is better.

The chemicals needed are for a lot of different tasks. Some of these are hard surface cleaners and many of them are the environmentally friendly formulations that may be of concern to you and or your clients. Finding the ones that can perform more than one purpose is especially important as costs rise when you have more chemicals than are actually needed.

Federal regulations from OSHA, EPA and, in some cases, the FDA require the presence of Material Safety Data Sheets, or MSDs for all chemicals you use. These stores will assist you in obtaining these, even if they are for chemicals they do not stock. Their database will assist you in making sure you have this information for your employees safety.

Customers, often owners and, many times, front line cleaners, just standing around will also provide you with real life experiences that can assist you in understanding some of the things that are happening to your cleaners and their tasks. Just talking with some of them will help you know how to deal with things you have just encountered. Some of them are old hands at this and have seen it all.

Many of these supply stores only handle a few brands or lines of products. They know these very well and all of that knowledge can be transferred to other similar products. Small tools are very similar in nature, large equipment are extremely similar and chemicals are largely, with a few exceptions, made from the same stuff. It is the knowledge and experience gleaned from others that help you and your employees get better.
