It's funny how fast people are to really forgive when you're up-front and admit your mistakes overtly and truthfully. However, if you deny responsibility, people lose their respect for you and may continue to go after you till you admit your mistakes.
It is much easier to be open and fair about your shortcomings and faults than attempt to cover anything up.
