The Thoughts With Vintage Advertising Signs

By Katy Kline

To be able to sell products or talk about community events you need to give communication about it. Vintage advertising signs are are an important thing in our world today. This type of industry has been around for centuries.

Signs are usually a mixed array of colors. The type of colors and pictures used depends on what time period the particular advert came from. If you are talking about the 1980s you have more realistic artwork. As well as neutral colors mixed with bright colors. If we go back to the 1960s we see very artistic photos. Lots of loops and swirls, nothing realistic. They liked things very vibrant and colorful. As you can understand advertising is a huge mix of many different things. As long as it is very visual and gets people to look at it, it is doing its job.

In the 17th century giant signs used to hang over buildings. This was a huge danger to pedestrians. They were ordered to be taken down, and none were allowed to hang. In later years people realized that the advertisements were needed. They were allowed to be hung as long as they were fastened securely to a wall or building. This stopped the falling of them, which meant no crushed customers, which was never good for business.

When the light bulb was created in the 19th century, it changed everything. People now wanted this spectacular item in their posters. This meant a new vivid way to advertise, something that had not been seen before.

The first neon tube was viewed in 1921, which was during the 20th century. This became the next most popular item to go with signs. This was most popular in cities and made for a great lite up town at night. People were very excited to see these lights as it was different from anything they had seen before.

During a few wars there was a complete cut of the use of metal and tin. They could be used for nothing but war efforts. This really hit companies hard. They had to find an alternate solution. Plastic was what jumped at them. It was pretty inexpensive and very functional. Exactly what they had been looking for.

Around the 1950s certain plastics were still pricier then neon. Although this was the case companies still chose plastic. Since it was simpler to make it allowed them to produce more product, which meant the ability to sell more. Also neon at the time forced them to make contracts with other places outside of their business. Eliminating neon, got rid of the need for these.

Over the years vintage advertising signs have gone from black and white, to color, to crazy patterns. They were then transformed into visual masterpieces. They had light bulbs and neon tubes, making colors even more vibrant. Eventually things settled down during the war and plastic became the most popular material. Without the advancing of these over time, our world would not be the same.
