Kids' Party Ideas: Birthday Fireworks!

By Luisa Sharpe

Party planning can be a lot of fun, especially when planning an event for children. However, if you haven't planned a party before, it can be daunting. Whether you are planning for your own child, or for a friend's or sibling's child, you may need some ideas to get you started. Remember to stay within your budget! Birthday fireworks are great, but not every one is able to afford something that extravagant.

Even if you cannot afford a huge, extravagant celebration, you can definitely create a party that kids will love. Often, children do not have a concept of how much something costs. All they know is whether or not they had fun. Here are some tips and things to keep in mind to help you plan the party and keep your sanity.

1. Pick a theme. Does you child have a particular character that he or she loves, like Caillou or Doc McStuffins? Choose the character as the theme for the party. Any party supply store will stock cups, streamers, banners, plates, and more with the most popular characters. Your child could even wear a costume to the party!

2. Plan the food. Choose something that is easy to prepare and simple to clean up, like pizza, hot dogs, or chicken wings. You may even want to order out, so that you don't have to worry about food preparation. If you do order out, be sure to place the order far enough in advance that you don't run into a time crunch. If your party has a theme, order or make a cake that fits with the theme. Also, make sure to have enough beverages on hand.

3. Have one large activity and several supplemental ones. Your main activity can be a huge thing like a petting zoo or a fireworks display, but it doesn't have to be. It can also be something free and simple, like a baseball game in the backyard or a movie in the living room. It's all in the way it is planned and presented. Another good idea is to keep some bubbles, coloring books, and extra toys around for kids who get bored or distracted from the main event.

4. Add extra touches. Making a birthday chair or throne for the birthday girl or boy can be a fun addition. Also, a candy table with a variety of different candies will be sure to be a hit. You can send goodie bags home with the guests, too, with little trinkets from a discount store.

5. Ask for help, and have other adults around. You do not have to handle all of the planning on your own, and you definitely should not be the only one supervising on the day of the party. Ask your friends and siblings for help, and get a couple of parents to agree in advance to attend the party with their kids.

No matter what your theme or activity, organized planning will be the key! The kids will be entertained by clowns, fireworks, characters in costume, or just good food and a fun game. You will get the hang of party planning after doing it a couple of times, and it will get easier!
