The Basic Approaches To A Simple EMDR Treatment

By Krystal Branch

Treating post traumatic stress disorder can be done with EMDR Denver. The person suffering from this disorder should call up for the assistance of a professional. The professional is the one who will administer this treatment. The said treatment is composed of eight phases, each with precise intentions of their own.

The first phase for this is the making of the history and treatment plan. The clinician, during this time, will be conducting an initial evaluation of the patient's history. The result of the evaluation conducted by the clinician will decide what treatment plan should be developed to help cure the patient of the sickness.

The next phase is the processing. At this point, the person is asked to focus on the disturbing memory while the professional initiates the lateral eye movement. The professional will get associative information from the person suffering from the disorder during this procedure. There will be new materials to work on after this phase.

The professional will then focus on the assessment part of the treatment. During this point, the professional will ask the person to visualize an image representing the disturbing memory. The person will then be asked to describe it through negative cognition. Once done, the person will then be asked to develop positive cognition to associate with the image.

Desensitization. The traumatic experience will certainly linger in the client's head for a long time. In this case, the therapist will have to bring up all the negative cognition the client has. After making some requests and gestures that the client can follow, it should be possible to desensitize the latter for it. The client will not feel as strongly against it as before.

Installation will then come next. This time, the person will be asked to focus on the positive cognition developed during the assessment part of the treatment. Just like with the procedure during the desensitization phase, the professional will ask the person to follow some gestures that will help install the positive thoughts into their minds in place of the negative ones.

The body scan is the next step to this. This is the part where one has to identify uncomfortable sensations that might still be lingering in one's body. While one is thinking about the disturbing memory, check the body for any tension or physical discomfort. Target them so that they can be eliminated.

Closure. It is only appropriate to pursue closure, especially when the time allotted for the treatment of the trauma is not enough to cover the resolution of the problem. For the closure, one might need to know more of relaxation techniques to help out with one's emotional stability or tranquility. These techniques may sound simple or plain but they are really helpful to those clients suffering from stress.

Reevaluation. This is considered to be the last phase in the procedure that the therapist will administer. The initial evaluation is not enough to see the condition of a client. Make sure to reevaluate the client every now and then. The client should be completely fine after going through proper treatment.
