Prepper Food Supplies For Emergencies And Disasters

By Juana Buchanan

It takes foresight to prepare oneself in the case of a national disaster or emergency. A three-month to yearlong supply of perishable items should be kept on hand at times to feed your household if you cannot get to a grocery store. Prepper food supplies are those products that individuals stock up on to be well equipped to nourish their families during a financial, man-made or natural disaster.

You can stock these products yourself if you want to take the time and effort. It does not have to be expensive but it does take some diligence. Every time you visit your local grocer's, make a point of picking up extra basics that have long shelf lives and store them in a safe place.

These could include dry goods such as flour, sugar, pasta, oatmeal, rice, cornmeal, nuts, seeds, baking soda, baking powder, spices, coffee, tea, drink mixes, powdered milk, salt, and legumes. Items such as packaged cookies and cereals do not have long shelf lives but can be stored to be used first. Vitamins are also necessary items to have on hand.

Canned goods should include meats, fish, stews, soups, fruits, vegetables, jams, jellies and juices. Peanut butter is also a staple that is high in protein and holds up well over time. Choose the types of products you know your family will enjoy and that they are accustomed to so meals are as normal as possible during a difficult time.

Water is the most important to your survival. Bottled water is fine but larger jugs are easier to store and handle. It will also be more efficient when used for cooking. Flavored waters, carbonated, tonic or seltzer waters will help provide variety.

Pre-packaged products can be purchased from several different companies if you prefer to go this route. It can be quite expensive but for some it is well worth the peace of mind it can bring. The majority of these products are freeze dried and have a shelf life of up to 25 years. They include entrees, side dishes, desserts, breakfast items, and snacks. Several different levels of supplies are available from the most basic to very extravagant choices. The kits often come with apparatus for cooking, water filtration bottles, as well as basics such as matches and utensils.

Always maintain a written inventory of everything you have stocked. This can tell you at a glance if the meals you make will be nutritious and well-balanced. Be sure to date and rotate the items especially if you plan on using them on a day-to-day basis. Store all of the stock in a place where moisture, heat, light and pests are not an issue.

Being prepared is always the wisest route for all families. Whether you choose to buy in bulk from a company that specializes in prepping or stock your own favorite items, you know that in the event of an emergency or natural disaster, your family will be well provided for.
