Using A Christian Executive Coach

By Katy Parfait

Christian leaders do just that - lead others, with the purpose of executing a vision. Those who lead and who are visionaries may not be particularly good as strategies and executing those strategies. This is where staff is hired to fill in those gaps and provide the missing pieces. A Christian Executive Coach is someone whose purpose is to fill voids in the lives of the leaders, serving a number of purposes as they push forward in their goals.

A leader's organization is a huge part of his or her life, but it is not all of it. He or she may have a family, friends or a community outside of the organization that require just as much attention. This broader vision of life is one that a coach can assist with by making sure that all objectives are properly handled at any one time. A coach will help create balance and nurture the "whole".

Coaches also serve as motivation. When leaders lead, they often do so alone. They rarely have anyone looking over them to monitor their work.

If they fail to show up, they fail to lead, the whole organization suffers and ultimately, they will not see their vision accomplished. No leader can be "on" all the time. Use your coach to be your "life alarm". Give them permission to challenge you directly, keep you motivated and keep you on track.

Finally, your coach should have the ability to be a wise sounding board for you. Leaders have a million terrific ideas, but not all of them should be tried. Use your coach as a sounding board to help you discern good ideas that are on track with your life goals from ones that are distractions. While no visionary likes to hear it, they all need to; give them permission to say, "that's not a good idea."

Your Christian Executive Coach is an investment you are making in your success. Use them strategically to keep you on course with your objectives. They are your safety net.
