Discovering The Goals Of Natural Shamanism

By Mary Roberts

When it comes to spirituality, there are often many different choices and viewpoints. While some have found practices such as meditation and yoga beneficial, there are others whom enjoy the benefits of Natural Shamanism. For, as with other paths, while there are many different aspects, Shamanism is born out of nature.

When defining the term shamanism, it is often suggest to be a health path or spiritual tradition. For, the basic concept of the practice is to build a stronger sense of connection to spirit and nature. First discovered as a spiritual path by Anthropologists, the term refers to an ancient Siberian tribe. Upon encountering the tribe, these individuals learned about the practice and associated rituals. After which, the term Shaman was given, and refers to the leaders of these indigenous tribes.

Later, it was discovered that the practice had cross-cultural connections to nature and spirit. After which, the practice and terminology became popular in varying parts of the world. Since that time, a newer form of shamanism has been developed which is often the esoteric form found by those practicing in the Western world.

Once the new form took hold, shamanism became more popularized in relation to New Age and Pagan spirituality. After which, it became more difficult to differentiate between the two practices. In most cases, Shamanism refers to the ancient practice. Whereas, those practicing in New Age circles often refer to the practice as esoteric shamanism.

There are many people, especially those in indigenous tribes whom consider either practice to hold all the spiritual and universal wisdom of the world. For, it is often believed that Shamans are all knowing, all seeing people. As such, it is often believed these individuals have an inherent database of wisdom along with intuitive and psychic abilities.

Most practitioners believe that only ancient Shamans, or descendants thereof, have healing abilities. For, while the basic aspects can be used to connect or reconnect with nature, not all have healing powers. As such, it is often good to be cautious when obtaining and paying for healing from anyone claiming to be a Shaman.

In fact, true shamanistic healers living in this day and age often provide services on a free or donation basis. For, these healers provide services to individuals while also focusing on healing various dysfunctions in a community. In this sense, community refers to animals, plants, planet, people, sea life, wild life and all of life as a whole. In all cases, it requires a commitment to daily spiritual practices in this area to achieve these goals.

With the ultimate goal being to create overall balance and well being, it can often be important to focus and meditate on a daily basis. There are times when shamans can be called to set up a vigil as a method of obtaining a calling or purpose. Whereas, there are others whom travel to different spiritual areas in order to strengthen and renew body, mind and spirit.
