The DMV is an agency that is tasked to administer titles and licenses. It stands for the Department of Motor vehicles, which is more or less a generic term. Different states bestow different names for their departments, though they are considered as one in the context of license renewal and issuance.

Aside from the licensing and registration purpose, the identification card issued by the DMV has become one of the de facto ID used in many transactions. The drivers license has become very important in countries where there is no national ID. Most people use their drivers license for daily transactions where a valid ID has to be presented.

Everything that is related to driving is under the umbrella of the DMV. It administers the written tests and the hands on examinations that someone who wants to have their license must take and successfully pass. It also regulates driving instructors and the private driving schools with which these people are affiliated.

This is also the agency that provides identification numbers for every possible vehicle. According to a certain set of guidelines, it decides whether a vehicle should be granted a registration plate, or just a temporary tag for the meantime. Most DMV for each state have their own registration program that tracks information about an automobile to prevent auto related crimes.

This department is also the one you turn to for the issuance of vehicular titles as proof of legal ownership. Each state has its own set of regulations in registry. It covers most vehicles, excluding the off road types.

If you have plans on transferring to another state, you will also have to have your vehicle registered under the state department. Some states like Florida give transferees a period of ten days to register their vehicles. This period begins when they start working in their new location or when they have their children transferred to a Florida school.

Registration renewal procedures also vary according to states. Each jurisdiction provides its own registration cycles and dates for expiry. Of course, these cycles and dates all depend on the kind of vehicle that you drive. Commercial types have to be renewed every six months, RV and mobile homes every year, and some vehicular types every two years. Compliance to these set of rules are essential for a safe and comfortable driving experience.
