What Can A Flower Wreath Be Used For?

By Katina Brady

You may have seen different kinds of decorations at various types of celebrations to mark a major life event or milestone. A flower wreath is a decorative piece that you often see at any kind of event, like a festival or religious time of year. You would also have seen wreaths at funerals, as they are a common feature during times of mourning.

There are a number of festivals and celebrations around the world to welcome spring. At such festivals, such as May Day and the maypole, wreaths are often used as headpieces made with specific flora. In European celebrations, the garland actually become a prize that is placed on top a pole during the event and young men are then picked to have a race. Whoever climbs up and retrieves the garland first is the winner and gets to wear the crown.

At religious times of year, this kind of piece is used as decoration. Many people will hang a large one on their front door as a symbol and a way to welcome any guest into their home. Wreaths can be used for absolutely anything. You can even have one at Easter time, which doesn't have to be floral. It could be made of plastic eggs for a fun way of celebrating the season.

If using wreaths as a symbol, for example, of spring, you should look at which flowers are commonly associated with such. Springtime flora is often daisies, daffodils or tulips. Violets can be seen later on in spring as summer approaches, as we as pansies.

At Christmas, a poinsettia decoration is the perfect way to adorn the home. Such a piece could be made completely from poinsettias, giving a burst of vibrant red, or they can be mixed with greenery for more of a balance. Also effective is to use a completely green wreath and strategically place two or three poinsettias for a pop of colour and an elegant finish.

Wreaths are commonly seen at funerals and the flowers that decorate these pieces are often those that have a natural association with the end of life. There are different reasons or symbols associated with different flowers, but white is often the colour of choice. White, which is known to symbolize purity, is also a sign of eternal life. The carnation and the lily are two widely used funeral flowers.

There are flowers used at times of death that are chosen for the way they smell and not necessarily how they look. This is because back in the day, when a body was starting to smell after a few days, the flowers were a means of hiding the smell as much as possible prior to burying. Today, this is not as important because we have ways of keeping the body preserved until it is ready to bury.

Floral garlands are easily bought at a store or on the Internet. It is also possible to make one at home, once the necessary materials have been purchased. It may take some patience and a little bit of skill to decorate a base with live flowers or even dried ones, as they are fragile. Alternatively, false flowers will give a great look that will last all year.
