Help Me Study - Goal Setting And Achievement Is A Process Not An Event

Simple question: Do you know what you are trying to achieve (in your education or just in life in general) - and why? Really think about that question. It's more important that anything. If you don't understand what you're trying to achieve or why you're trying to achieve it then you have absolutely no hope of getting there. Why? Well where are you trying to get to anyway? You haven't even defined it remember! So step one is to create a goal want to achieve and a goal you actually understand.

Once you have established the "what" and the "why", you can move to the next step - the "who". As in, who do you need to be to make sure that goal happens? What sort of actions do you need to take? How will you know if you are really on track or if you are just kidding yourself? Are you becoming the person you need to become to achieve the goal? Or are you just hoping that you can be exactly as you are now and still achieve the goal?

In other words, do you improve yourself each day in order to become the person you need to be in order to achieve the goal you want to achieve - or do you change nothing and do nothing and just hope everything will somehow work out for the best? Remember, be honest!

Achieving a goal is a process not an event. The problem is that people don't like processes - we like events! You see, we like to get an A+ on our Maths test, but we don't want to do the study and homework required (i.e. the process) to get the A+, we just want the event - the great score! We like the idea of looking fit and healthy but we don't like part where we have to eat well and exercise constantly. Do we? It all makes sense when you understand that we don't like the process - we just like the events.

The same goes for our education. We all want to be smart and learned (I hope!) But going through each grade and passing each test and handing in each assignment and doing all our homework and getting good grades is really hard work.

The process of passing school is hard, the process of being an A+ student is even harder. However, the events along the way, such as getting a good grade on a test, or getting a good report card, or getting into the College of your choice, are the enjoyable "events" (i.e. the rewards) for going through the process.

So what does this mean to us in terms of goal setting and goal achievement? Given that we now know that we don't like processes and we do like events, it makes a lot of sense that we may enjoy setting goals such as "I want an A average in all of my subjects" but we don't like doing the hard work to make sure that the goals actually happen. The process is hard and can be boring and tedious. We want the event (A average for every subject) not the hard work!

So, when you set a goal you need to consider the process of how this goal is going to come about. If you decide that you want to get an A+ in Maths (and by the way rule number one of goal setting is to make the goal specific not airy fairy like "I want to improve in Math") then what you really need to ask yourself is "Who do I need to become to achieve an A+ in Maths? What actions do I need to take on a daily basis to achieve an A+ in Maths?"

Achieving goals doesn't happen by chance. You must understand what the goal is and why it is important - and then you must make the decision to go through the process in order to reach the event. If you focus on the event (which is what we are inclined to do) you will find it very difficult to get through the process. If you focus only on the event, the process won't happen and the goal won't be achieved. What will you decide?

Well, that is now the past. This is the now. It's a brand new day along with a brand new possibility for getting your life organized. Nothing is greater than a brand new day to create some genuine determination!

If your organizational ability has been out of control in your past we can use that information to accurately predict that things are likely to always be out of control in your future. Pretty uncomplicated stuff isn't it? Do you want to see your long term future? Examine your history. Unless of course you decide that today is definitely the day to produce a change for yourself! You decide you'd love to get yourself super organized. You decide that you'd prefer to have a bunch of free time and get rid of all of that rushing, stress and worry? Does any of that seem good to you? I hope it does. We are going to take a look at some strategies you can actually put in place straight away to create a brand new organized you.

Get Control of your Time

What can you do to get control of your time?

1. Use a weekly planner to write in when assignments are due and when any tests or exams are taking place. It's natural to forget when assignments, tests and exams are due so take the pressure off by writing it all down.

2. Discover the periods you feel you might be most efficient and arrange your study times around them. This may be in the early morning before school or perhaps late at night. Your peak performance time may not be when you think it is so start exploring when you have lots of energy.

3. Keep up with assignments and other tasks from the start because studying small amounts over the whole week, the whole month or the whole term is a far superior strategy than delaying your study for one huge dose at the end. In other words, 30 minutes a day for 30 days is better than 15 hours in a row the day before your assignment is due!

Your Study Area

1. Always put things away when you are finished with them so you will always know where they are. This will save you a lot of time later that you can use to do extras (like mind maps) or just have extra free time as a bonus for being organized. Seinfeld re-runs anyone? A show about nothing you say? Surely you jest.

2. Make sure your zone is neat and tidy and an enjoyable place to be. Get rid of old sandwiches (and old socks) and clear the area of all known distractions (Oh One Direction poster - you are the ultimate distraction - stop looking at me with those dreamy eyes). If you choose not to do this, you will no doubt find distractions are just around the corner no matter how hard you focus.

Plan Your Daily Life

Every one of us wants to have and (I presume?) needs a functioning social life (whether that means seeing family and friends, sending e-mails, making phone calls or sending instant messages - or whether it means trying to play Angry Birds for 6 hours on end).

1. Make sure you have some time to connect with others every day and plan that time around your school and study times (note that we do not advise you plan your study around your social life - it must be the other way around).

2. From time to time the "peak study hours" - time throughout free periods at school and in the first few hours right after classes are done for the day - get wasted away by conversation and also the blab component (as in you are squandering time with directionless and largely pointless gossip). After that you find yourself too worn out or uninspired to study.

Use To-Do Lists

1. Create lists of three to five tasks that enable you to visually see what you need to do to get the outcome you want. Put the item and the deadline date.

2. Put the items on a bulletin board, the family fridge, in your rest room or in another space which you often pass by and will help to continuously remind you about your real concerns and just what you need to be focused on.

3. Mark the items off along the way. Human beings really like to mark items off; it makes us extremely satisfied! Tick!

4. In the event you can, place your schedule in your mobile or cell phone, in your laptop as well as in your email planner - and set up just as many reminders as is possible. This is a very useful technique.
