It has to be free of bird dropping, ash, food bits, debris, and dirt so it will not sustain any damages.

To protect the pit's surface, a good thing to do is to cover it with a protective sealant. This is an effective way of waterproofing the surface. It can also give added protection against the elements. There is a sealant that you can use for the kind of surface the pit is made of.

When you want to use the pet, you have to keep in mind that an accelerant would not be a good substance to use. As much as possible never use this in an effort to start a fire right away. These substances could damage the pit and could also be harmful for people and the environment.

If you are done using the pit, make sure that you will clean it up well. However, before doing so the fire must be put out so you will not get yourself burned. When using wood, always remember that it is not wise to use water to get rid of the fire. It is better to let it just die by itself.

If the pit is not going to be used for a while, the owner has to make sure that it is properly covered. This is going to protect the pit from water and dirt. For owners that are using a portable pit, they can just store it inside or anywhere that could keep the pit dry and safe.
