Taking In The Universe With Reiki Healing

By Helen Hughes

The universe is a vast, infinite, and ever expanding wealth of space and energy. The human beings who occupy a single planet are no more than mere atoms in comparison, less than dust. Of course there are people who understand their own insignificance in the face of an infinite universe. Then there are people who try to find some meaning to it, to find some kind of path that allows them to move forward while also being cognizant of their own insignificance. Some believe that they are able to channel the universe itself through their bodies, through reiki healing.

Now, healing with reiki involves the handling of universal energy. In some cultures, it might be seen as magic. In fact, the concept of universal energy or chi exists across a vast spectrum of human cultures and geographies. Be it called magic or spiritual enlightenment, it has existed in some form or another throughout the centuries.

People from all walks of life choose alternative medicine. Some people turn to it out of desperation, after every single conventional treatment option has been explored, including the experimental, bleeding edge treatments. Other people were born into a culture with a long, rich history and tradition of such beliefs. And other simply fear or mistrust western medicine, either through an experience in the past or through misunderstanding.

Unlike conventional medicine, there is no equipment involved. Aside from the caregiver and the receiver, there is nothing involved. Some people may use candles and beads, but those are purely for aesthetic purposes.

Unlike more conventional healthcare professionals, there is no sanctioning body to a reiki healer. Literally can become a reiki healer. All a person has to do to become one is have hands and a belief that energy can be channeled through those hands. Formal schooling does exist, but it is not required.

Some experience an improvement in health after a session. Some can also experience an improvement in mood after a session. There may possibly be some benefits to the practice.

There is no scientific evidence that the practice of healing with reiki works at all. There are some studies that show marked improvements in patients, however, the methodology for these studies was proven to be somewhat flawed. Now, if a patient does experience positive effects, this is generally because of the placebo effect.

Alternative medicine sometimes stands in opposite of western healthcare. However, it is western medicine that has the proven track record of saving lives and making people better. The placebo effect can make a person feel better, but actual treatment can make a person better.

To some, being born may have been a curse. That is because the universe is so vast and infinite that it cannot hope to be understood or even for a person to find their place in it. So people search for meaning. But that search should never blind eyes to the truth.
