Every Day Is Reason To Celebrate With Weird National Holidays

By Angel Dudley

Whether it's the 4th of July or Christmas, everyone loves a holiday. The official ones mean that you can get a day off work but in the USA, there are unofficial holidays for almost every day of the year and celebrating almost anything under the sun. Some try to help make the world a better place, some remind you to appreciate those around you and some are just downright strange. You may want to keep a calendar of weird national holidays on your desk so you can feel as if every day is a holiday.

Some days are set aside for good causes. For example, on January 15 you may celebrate Humanitarian Day by doing something that will help make the world a better place. July 18 is International Nelson Mandela Day, where you need to devote only 67 minutes of your time to doing good, in recognition of the 67 years of service Nelson Mandela gave to humanity. You'll also find days dedicated to specific causes, like homeless animals, senior citizens or people married to a Scorpio.

Specific groups, from the weatherman to left-handed people, also have their own special appreciation days. Spare a thought for operating room nurses and the tooth fairy on their respective days and also remember to appreciate a dragon on January 16. If you have a special relationship with your computer, Name Your PC Day may be just the holiday for you.

Many national holidays have an educational slant. World Book Day, Stop Bullying Day and Kid Inventors' Day are just some that may encourage children to learn. You're never too old to learn something new yourself and Learn Your Name in Morse Code Day may be a great time to start. Also remember that April 23, the day on which The Bard was born as well as the day on which he died, is Talk Like Shakespeare Day.

Think of anything edible and there's probably a holiday for it. Pies, Slurpees, beans, tortilla chips, junk food and red apples are only some of the foodstuffs that have their own holidays. If you can't pick a favorite, have them all on January 2, which is National Buffet Day. Another solution is to wait for December 16, the day for anything chocolate-covered.

National One-hit Wonder Day is a great way to celebrate those forgotten bands of yesteryear. You can also show your appreciation for music on other days. On Violin Day, for instance, you may want to listen to a string quartet, a symphony orchestra or a virtuoso fiddler in a Klezmer group. Saxophone Day is perfect for soul or jazz.

Games enthusiasts have much to rejoice about too. From trivia to puzzles, there is a day to appreciate your favorite game. If you're more into seemingly bizarre sports, you'll also love Curling is Cool Day.

You may find calendars of weird national holidays such as Talk Like A Pirate Day online. After all, it's useful to know when International Moment of Frustration Scream Day is. One day that you'll definitely want to mark on your calendar is March 10, which is International Day of Awesomeness.
